Conference Suggestions?
I’m planning to attend a conference this year…but not sure which one. Any suggestions? I’m interested in Java, Web, services, software engineering, etc.
Thanks!

Javaword covers JetBrains moving into the Ruby IDE space with a plug-in to its excellent IntelliJ IDE. And what Ruby-related article would be complete without a quote from America’s favorite Rockstar coder, DHH?
“While I was doing Java, IntelliJ was the only thing that kept me from killing myself in frustration over the language. It still wasn’t exactly happy programming, but IntelliJ helped mitigate some of the worst deficiencies of working in Java.”
So rich. So Rockstar! Well, the world has yet another reason to be grateful for IntelliJ. Not only is it the greatest IDE ever, but it saved the life of the very man who would go on to create Rails. Just think of all the things we could have accomplished if legions of programmers had not killed themselves in frustration over C, or Assembly! Or (insert-name-of-godawful-IDE-here).
The refactr guys have a new look and it’s great! Very clean and functional. Nice work!
I read this in the comments section of the Object Mentor Blog. Tim Ottinger says, “…my favorite definition of “expert”? The guy who knows what all the errors look like.”
Too good!

The title of this article is a little misleading. It’s really a great article by Bruce Eckel on how he arrived at the conclusion that Flex 2/ Flash is the right RIA platform for him. In my opinion, Flex 2 has a terrific IDE, produces usable applications, and is fairly fast to development applications in. I choose Flex when I’m building a web application (with a more traditional desktop feel), and I choose Ajax when I’m enhancing existing web applications (like making dialogs popup up inline and dynamically retrieve content).
Hybridizing Java
I have to admit that I’m very excited to see this JSR. I’ve used Joda time and think it’s a superb library. I wouldn’t use anything else for date manipulation in Java.
